Along with Koufax, Drysdale, Gibson, Spahn, Seaver and Jenkins, the Dominican native has been enshrined in Cooperstown.

Last night BAT, the Baseball Assistance Team, the charity that helps needy former players, held its annual fundraising banquet in New York. Dozens of baseball celebrities were on hand, including many Mets -- whose 50th anniversary was the evening's theme.

One of the game's best hitting catchers, he's been a part of 5 Yankee World Series champions -- and the starting catcher on three of them.
The aging process is especially difficult on catchers, and by 2011, he was primarily a DH, who occasionally spent time at 1st base.We'll remember his fiery temperament and his impressive offensive numbers, career totals that five years from now could make him a Cooperstown candidate. Today, let's salute Posada, who's earned his place on the Mount Rushmore of Yankee catchers -- alongside Dickey, Berra, Howard and Munson. And he also goes out as a career Yankees -- much like Mantle, Ford, DiMaggio and Gehrig, he'll have spent his entire playing career only in Yankee pinstripes.

Jesus Montero, the highly touted hitter (whose catching skills have been questioned) goes to Seattle for Michael Pineda, the tall and impressive right-handed pitcher, who debuted to 9-10 record in 2011. This deal should keep the phones at Seattle and New York's sports-talk radio stations buzzing -- on what normally would be football weekend.

Congratulations to Barry Larkin, announced today as a member of the Baseball Hall of Fame's Class of 2012. Along with Cal Ripken and Lou Gehrig, he's among the few to have played his entire career in his hometown: in Larkin's case, Cincinnati. For 17 of his 19 seasons, his address was Riverfront Stadium. Say hello to Pirates catching prospect Tony Sanchez. The Miami native and onetime 1st-round draft pick spent 2011 playing for Double-A Altoona. Though his numbers slipped (it was his first full season in which he didn't bat .300), he certainly has the look down complete with the chaw (gum nowadays, not tobacco) planted firmly in the right cheek, the determined expression and total confidence balancing his mask and helmet atop his head.

Fans who travel to Yankee Stadium by Metro North Railroad walk past this truly hallowed ground en route to the day or night's game.

December 23rd serves up some notable baseball birthdays: Brad Lidge (above, in a St Patricks Day exhibition game) enjoyed a perfect 2008 season, with no blown saves as the Phillies won the World Series. Jerry Koosman (below), was the standout lefthander on the Mets 1969 champions (and the only pitcher on that team to win two games in that year's World Series). He's second from the right in a 2009 Citi Field salute honoring that team's 40th anniversary -- with Yogi Berra (a coach that season), Nolan Ryan, Jerry Grote, Tom Seaver and Duffy Dyer.
Hanley Ramirez of the Marlins (above) is expected to move from shortstop to 3rd base in 2012 to make room for the arrival of the former Met Jose Reyes. Josh Satin, yet another December 23rd baby, made his major league debut with the Mets last September.

With all the hoopla around Albert Pujols leaving the Cardinals for the Angels, the time's right to get a look at the ballpark he'll call home for the next decade.
I last visited in March 2008 for a "freeway series" exhibition with the Dodgers. Couldn't help but be impressed by the palm-framed concession stands outside the stadium. And here's the field itself: looking toward the outfield, and below, a sense of what he'll see manning 1st base.
Below, of course, the goal: to bring the Angels another World Series championship, to go along with one they earned in 2002.

The Marlins reeled in their second big free agent this off-season, signing Jose Reyes to a 6-year deal worth more than 100-million dollars. (He joins newly acquired closer Heath Bell.)
The bold but brittle speedster became the first Met ever to win a batting title in 2011. This four-time all-star and three-time stolen base champ leaves New York after nine seasons, but only one trip to the post-season.

Cleaning out the drawers of a table we decided to junk, I found this unused sheet of the special issue postage stamps honoring classic ballparks. To be honest, I'd forgotten I had this (a bad symptom of being a packrat). I'd been to six of these legendary parks -- Tiger and Yankee Stadiums, The Polo Grounds, Fenway, old Comiskey Park and Wrigley Field. How about you? Everyone Wants to Capture History

This Citi Field picture from the center field seats at a Subway Series game last July tells quite a story: The fans in the front row are snapping away as Mariano Rivera enters in the 9th inning to nail down the victory. He's nearing the all-time record for saves, which he'd reach two-and-a-half months later. And we're not seeing traditional cameras, but camera-phones. Now, a big chunk of the crowd can focus on a legendary player and bring home their own souvenir, one that says, "I was there. I saw him. I captured a piece of history."

Yes, it was a good Yankee season and a difficult one for the Mets. But look at the volume of Yankee fans, all in that front row, most wearing Yankee replica gear -- in the Mets' home park!

A Fitting Tribute

This summer at Citizens Bank Park, the Phillies unveiled a statue of their beloved broadcaster Harry Kalas. It's located in Ashburn Alley, the concourse beyond the outfield fence that's named for his longtime on-partner Richie Ashburn.

Standing seven feet high, the monument is near the entrance to Harry the K's, the restaurant at the base of the ballpark's towering scoreboard.

Kalas, the voice of the Phillies for 38 years, as well as a prominent narrator for NFL Films, died in April 2009.

Oakland's Ongoing Issue

A report this weekend has the Athletics owners finalizing a plan for the long-beleaguered franchise to move to San Jose.
Citing an outmoded stadium, seen here in 1993 before it was reconfigured to accommodate football when the Raiders returned to Oakland, the A's say the Coliseum won't ever enable them to be financially sound. And even in its original design, it was never baseball-centric.
This round, multi-purpose bowl from the 1960s is out of touch with where stadium design has evolved. It's not retro, and lacks the profit-making amenities (superboxes, restaurants, endless variety of concessions) you find almost everywhere. Fans sit a long way from the action. Despite the best efforts of every owner since Charles O. Finley, the Coliseum -- which has had many sponsored names over the years -- is apparently not a viable home for a ballclub. The A's finished dead last in attendance this year.

Congratulations to Regis Philbin, who retired today after a terrific 28 year run on morning TV here in New York, and across the country. This lifelong (and very vocal) Yankee fan certainly lucked out on the day he threw out the first pitch before a game: September 19th, 2011, when Mariano Rivera made history with his 602nd career save.

I got a look at Matt Kemp during Cactus League play back in March. While looking serious about preparing for the season, no one could have predicted what he'd achieve. His near-triple-crown season for the Dodgers have now paid off in an eight-year, $160-million contract extension. Despite the Dodgers' still uncertain ownership, it's clear they'll hold on to their best player for the rest of the decade.

Citi Changes Are Coming

After three seasons plagued by losing records, a lack of offense and declining attendance, the Mets have announced major changes are coming to Citi Field in 2012:
Mets.com has the details, with closer and shorter fences.
And in a move that ought to appeal to fans who feel the ballpark isn't Mets-centric enough, the club will paint that new outfield fence blue. Not only is it not the Mets' primary color, but the black fence added a gloomy, dungeon-like effect to the cavernous outfield. Perhaps, the tighter, brighter dimensions will make the park more appealing to power hitters -- both potential acquisitions and prospects from the farm system.
One of Citi's most annoying features, the Mo Zone, that section of right field that suddenly and confusingly juts back, is being brought even with the rest of the fence.

ALCS MVP

Nelson Cruz turned in an unprecedented performance for the Texas Rangers: his two-run homer Saturday night raised his ALCS totals to six home runs and 13 RBIs — both major league records for a postseason series. I caught him at Yankee Stadium last June in a game the Rangers likely forgot as quickly as they could.

Prior to Cruz's feat, the only players with five homers in a single postseason series were Reggie Jackson, Ken Griffey Jr., Juan Gonzalez and Chase Utley. The previous post-season RBI record was 12 by Bobby Richardson and John Valentin.

As good as he's been since coming to Texas (in the same deal that brought them free agent-to-be Carlos Lee), it's hard to believe that he failed to impress during his days in three other organizations -- the Yankees, A's and Brewers.

He Wasn't Bunting Tonight

One of the best catches I've seen in years ended the top of the 6th inning at yesterday afternoon's Mets/Phillies game. With a runner on 2nd base and two out, Jimmy Rollins seem to crush an R.A. Dickey knuckleball.
Nick Evans, was in right field after some maneuvers caused by Jason Bay leaving the game early. He tracked the ball as it headed toward's Citi Field's "Mo Zone."
He reached out, caught it, and held on as he landed on his back. An A-PLUS effort!

The best setting for a ballgame is on a sunny weekday afternoon. When my pal Dennis and I noticed a Yankees make-up game with the Twins on Monday afternoon the 19th, we thought this was one we didn't want to miss -- as long as the weather cooperated. Then, the days and the numbers converged to make it one for the books. Seeing Mariano Rivera continue to keep piling up taves, we knew there was a chance that September 19th might give us a special opportunity. The odds got better and better, as Mo tied Trevor Hoffman's alltime record on the 17th. He then got a day off on the 18th as the Yanks lost to the Blue Jays.So we arrived at the Stadium today knowing there was a chance that history could be made. The Yankees jumped off to a quick 5-0 lead on the Twins -- too big a lead to allow for a save opportunity. But A.J. Burnett saw to it that it wouldn't be an easy win, as the Twins pulled to within a run. Once the game tightened, first Cory Wade, then Boone Logan, Rafael Soriano and David Robertson did their part. They kept Minnesota in check, and set the stage for Mo to pitch the 9th inning -- with the chance for that record setting save. Two out, no one on, two strikes on Chris Parmelee.
Called strike three! The Yankees win 6-4, and career save #602 for the methodical, classy and incomparable Mariano Rivera.

Phils Claim Their Place in October

Two standouts in the Phillies division-clinching victory last night: pitcher Roy Oswalt, who after an injury-plagued season tossed seven shutout innings, and left fielder Raul Ibanez, whose grand slam homer capped their 8th inning rally.
The Phillies join the Yankees (1960-'64), A's (1991-'95) and Braves (1991-2005) as the only teams to finish in first place for five consecutive seasons. The job isn't complete; the post-season has yet to be played.

First Team to Clinch in 2011

Rivera Reaches 600

Congratulations to Mariano Rivera, who just minutes ago closed out the Yankees 3 - 2 win over Seattle, and became just the second pitcher ever with 600 career saves. His next save will tie him with the longtime Padre, Trevor Hoffman. Two more will make him baseball's alltime saves leader.
Rivera's first-ever save came just over 15 years ago, on May 17th, 1996 -- Derek Jeter was the Yankee shortstop and Joe Girardi (now his manager) was the Yankee catcher. And this was the bullpen from which he emerged that night at the previous Yankee Stadium.

A California Yankee Debuts at Home

The Yankees other highly rated catching prospect Austin Romine made his major league debut Sunday at Angel Stadium in Anaheim. (I caught him with the Double-A Trenton Thunder back in June.) Pressed into service due to injuries to starter Russell Martin and backup Francisco Cervelli, the former Trenton Thunder backstop caught the final three innings of the Yankees 5 - 4 victory.
Austin collected his first hit in the majors in his second game, September 12th at Seattle, off Mariners reliever Dan Cortes.
As if making it to the majors wasn't enough of a thrill, Romine, who grew up in Southern California, saw his first big league action in front of his parents and older brother. His father Kevin Romine spent six years with the Red Sox, mostly as a bench player. And his older brother Andrew is the Angels backup shortstop.

Jesus Grabs the Headlines

Highly touted Yankee prospect Jesus Montero (seen her in Grapefruit League play last March) enjoyed his first big major league game on Labor Day. The 21 year old belted a pair of home runs to right center field, the first to put the Yanks ahead and the second providing what would become the winning run in an 11 - 10 victory over the Orioles.
For an organization that often considers prospects to be bargaining chips to obtain the next high priced veteran in a trade, it's nice to see this home-grown Yankee get his chance to play in the Bronx -- and, if the two curtain calls he received are any indication, to seize the moment.
So welcome to the show, Mr. Montero. You've come a long, long way from Trenton!

Texas' Big Bat

Josh Hamilton (seen here earlier this season at Yankee Stadium) delivered another big hit yesterday as the Rangers won the rubber game of their series in Boston. The 2010 American League MVP's bases-loaded triple capped a seven-run 6th inning in an 11-4 Texas victory. Unlike the Yanks, Red Sox and Tigers, whose post-season spots seem almost assured, the Rangers lead the Angels by just three in the loss column in the AL West. So every game they play is under pressure.

No September Call-up

Matt Rizzotti has enjoyed a pair of very productive minor league seasons in the Phillies organization. Between 2010 and 2011, he's smacked 40 home runs, driven in 151 runs and batted over .300 (.290 this summer). And keep in mind, most of those stats were with Reading of the Eastern League, a notoriously pitcher-friendly loop.
But the numbers didn't lead to a 2011 promotion to Triple-A or a September call-up to the majors. It's looking more and more like his time with the Phils in spring training was as close as he'll get to Citizens Bank Park. CC Sabathia (seen here in Spring Training 2011) did what's expected of an ace -- helping his team win a crucial game. Not at the top of his form -- giving up 10 hits in 6 innings is far from his best --the big lefthander kept pitching out of trouble and maintained the Yankees' lead. Turning it over to the bullpen after six, they wrapped up New York's 5 - 2 win at Fenway. But Mariano Rivera and company wouldn't have been there without CC's gutty effort.

Hours after an earthquake rumbled across much of the east coast, a Phillies fan put a humorous spin on the seismic surprise. Putting quite a jolt on a Jon Neise pitch, the Phillies red-hot John Mayberry Junior homers for the third time in five games. Two-and-a-half years after looking like a top flite prosect, he's now delivering.
The ball lands in the left field stands, while Mayberry receives a round of high fives after "touching 'em all."

His grand-slam home run, with the game tied and two out, powered the Nationals past the 1st-place Phillies 8 - 4. Izzy's Milestone

Jason Isringhausen hadn't pitched in the majors for two years when he came to the Mets training camp last winter. Injuries and ineffectiveness had apparently ended the veteran reliever's career. But a strong showing in Florida landed him a roster spot. And the trade of Francisco Rodriguez gave him a chance to close games again. On August 15th, Isringhausen, once a highly touted Mets prospect, earned his 300th career save, getting the final outs in New York's victory over the Padres. Hat's off for becoming the 23rd pitcher to reach that milestone.

And thanks to Jaden Daly for sharing this bonus info: "Izzy picked up his 300th save ten years to the day that Trevor Hoffman got his. Ironically enough, Hoffman reached the milestone when his Padres defeated none other than the New York Mets on August 15, 2001."

A-Gon's Main Rival

Yankee center fielder Curtis Granderson could well be Adrian Gonzalez' chief rival for the 2011 AL MVP. His home run against the Rays on Saturday was his 33rd, lifting him into a tie for most in the league with Toronto's Jose Bautista. Michael Martinez first caught my attention in spring training. Sure, one always pulls for somebody who shares your first name, but this rookie utilityman impressed for plenty of other reasons. Back in March, I watched him lay down a beautiful bunt that set up the winning rally in a game the Phillies on in the bottom of the 9th. He fielded several positions well. Clearly Charlie Manuel and Ruben Amaro Jr also liked what they saw from the Rule-5 draftee.
In a year the Phils have overcome numerous key injuries, Martinez has played several positions. Today, he started at 3rd base for the ailing Placido Polanco. Top of the 5th inning, he batted with two men on and the Phils up 1-0. Facing Mike Pelfrey, he picked the right time for his first major league home run!
Rounding 3rd and heading home, Martinez follows Kyle Kendrick and Jimmy Rollins as the Phillies boost the lead to 4 - 0. Notice the symmetrical beauty of all three players on the 3rd base line, as Kendrick's foot touches home plate.
Plenty of high-5's in the dugout for Martinez, who later added a sacrifice fly.

Austin Romine at Trenton

I had a couple of chances during June to watch Austin Romine, one of the Yankees highly touted catching prospects. Emblematic of his being the best hitter on the Trenton ballclub, Romine normally bats third.
While this initially appeared to be an ordinary infield grounder, he ran hard to 1st base and when the throw went astray, Romine was safe. Good effort!

Newark, NJ's Riverfront Stadium

Traveling through New Jersey yesterday, I had a half-hour wait between trains at Newark's Broad Street Station. I couldn't help but notice the city's independent league ballpark from the platform. You can guess what I did with my spare time.
It turns out the Newark Bears (of the Can-Am League) had played at home that morning, but by 4:30 the park was closed. Luckily, the phone cam was able to reach through the gates.Nicely located adjacent to the rail station, I can now place Riverfront Stadium alongside Atlanta's now-demolished Fulton County Stadium as ballparks I've seen on the outside only!

Besides the National League's 5-1 victory, the biggest news coming from the All Star Game was the Mets trading closer Francisco Rodriguez to the Brewers. Eager to move "K-Rod" before an ultra-expensive contract extension would likely have kicked in, the Mets get "future considerations," while Milwaukee goes for it all right now. With slugger Prince Fielder likely leaving as a free agent this winter, they get a bullpen leader who could help land them in the World Series this fall.

Congratulations to Derek Jeter, on becoming the 28th major leaguer -- and first who spent his entire career as a Yankee -- to reach 3000 hits. (For trivia buffs, 11 of the 28 members of Club 3000 played for just one club.) He did it in style!
The first player to reach 3000 going 5-for-5, Jeter is just the second player (onetime teammate Wade Boggs was the first) whose 3000th hit was a home run. Only fitting for the man wearing #2, Yankee television voice Michael Kay noted that Jeter's historic blast came exactly as the Stadium clock struck 2:00. And, of course for a player who built his reputation on being clutch, his final hit of the game drove home the go-ahead run!

Hard to precisely translate into text the homegrown cheer fans at Citizens Bank Park have come up with for left fielder Raul Ibanez (seen here back in April).
But you can bet it was loud and long after the veteran lefty swinger's 10th inning homer gave the Phils a 3-2 win in Friday's opener of a weekend series with the 2nd place Braves. And below, congratulations to Charlie Manuel -- the win was his 600th as Phillies manager.
Just 46 more victories (a total he could reach by season's end) and he'll pass the much maligned Gene Mauch as the winningest Phillies manager ever.

Thursday's Phillies/Red Sox game was expected to be a classic pitching duel between standout lefties Jon Lester and Cole Hamels. But Hamels worked just 4 innings, after taking a line drive off his glove hand. Then Lester grabbed the spotlight, freezing the Phillies offense on a day temperatures reached the 80s.
And the Red Sox big bat? Their captain, the veteran catcher Jason Varitek smacked a pair of home runs as Boston salvaged the final game of this interleague series, 5-2.

The Yankees 65th annual Old Timers Day was not only a celebration of achievement, but a delightful "class reunion" for those who've worn the pinstripes.

On the Comeback Trail

Plenty of Yankee fans made the trip to New Britain Stadium to watch one of the Yankees most important young pitchers made a minor league rehab start.
Pitching for New York's Trenton farm club, Phil Hughes lasted just 3-1/3 innings in an uneven appearance against Eastern League rival New Britain. Hughes looked good early, needing just 10 pitches to get the first inning and 17 in the second. Below, a nice touch supplied by the Rock Cats: a cake, decorated Yankee style, for Hughes on his 25th birthday.
After the game, Hughes was reminded that he once took part in a rehab game for another Yankee five years ago -- in 2006, Gary Sheffield, recovering from an injury, played a game for Trenton, where Hughes was then a top Yankee prospect. This time, he was the major leaguer that gave a minor league game added importance.

Or should I have titled this entry, "Life Begins (Again) at 80?" The under-achieving Florida Marlins, having forced out manager Edwin Rodriguez after the club began June winning just once in 18 games, have brought back a familiar face. Jack McKeon, who led the team to the 2003 World Series title, takes over. A longtime consultant to the organization, McKeon turned 80 last November. Seen above chatting with the Phillies' Charlie Manuel two springs ago in Florida, "Trader Jack" becomes the oldest manager since Connie Mack piloted the 1950 Philadelphia A's. And since Mister Mack was famous for wearing a business suit instead of a uniform, he might be the oldest ever to hold the post and actually suit up!

The Understudy Gets the Call

Eduardo Nunez first caught my eye at Spring Training 2009, when, with several Yankee regulars away for the World Baseball Classic, he saw a lot of additional playing time. A couple of regular season games with the Trenton farm club only reinforced the idea that he might be a keeper. After making his major league debut last season, Nunez made the Yankees as a backup infielder this year.
On June 14th, with Derek Jeter on the disabled list, Nunez contributed two hits, drove in the game's first run with a 2nd inning single (seen below) and a run scored as the Yankees walloped the Texas Rangers 12 - 4 .
It was an early shower for the previously undefeated Alexei Ogando.
Though no one can project much -- not even how anyone will do over the next 15 games -- Nunez was a solid contributor. I have a hunch he'll make more positive impressions while "The Captain" is on the shelf.

Roberto Clemente's Most Unique Fan

Pirates second baseman Neil Walker is one of the team's bright young stars. And he's bonded in a special way with Pittsburgh baseball icon Roberto Clemente.
Walker's dad, a former Pirate, was Clemente's teammate and friend. On December 31st, 1972, he was in Puerto Rico helping Roberto load supplies bound for Nicaraguan earthquake victims. He planned to join his teammate on the humanitarian mission, but was talked out of it by Clemente, who told him to go home and enjoy the holiday with his family -- a decision that saved Tom Walker's life more than a decade before Neil was born. USA TODAY has the full story.Nice to see Walker doing well in his first full major league season. Just a year ago, I caught him playing for Triple-A Indianapolis against Lehigh Valley.

On May 25th, he played the first 18 innings at 2nd base, and then made his professional debut as a pitcher in the top of the 19th inning. He walked one and retired the other three Cincinnati batters he faced. In the bottom of the inning, Raul Ibanez broke the tie with a sacrifice fly, as the Phillies edged the Reds 5-4.

I found an almost-forgotten disc of 2002 photos that included several from a picture perfect afternoon at the old Yankee Stadium.
Before the Yankees host the Twins, a pre-game ceremony with Derek Jeter and some young fans.
It turned out to be an historic day -- as Roger Clemens tied the Twins' future Hall of Famer Bert Blyleven with his 287th career victory. "The Rocket" threw eight innings of shutout ball and striking out 13. Mariano Rivera tossed a scoreless 9th inning in the Yankees 3-0 victory.

Wearing #68 in Grapefruit League play, I thought I'd better post an image of Emaus before he's totally forgotten by the Flushing Faithful. (And moments after I first posted this, I read that Toronto turned around and traded Emaus to Colorado). Then, I recalled snapping this one in an early-April game in Philadelphia.

Tulo, Too Long!

On a foggy, misty night more suited to a Stephen King novel or a low-budget 1940s Universal horror film, the Mets hosted the Rockies at Citi Field. And Troy Tulowitzki was the difference maker.
Colorado's shortstop (who wears #2 to honor his idol Derek Jeter), came to bat in the top of the 5th inning with his team trailing and runners on 2nd and 3rd base. Instead of being walked, the Mets decided to pitch to him. A bad choice that turned the game.
Tulowitzki's bullet landed in the right field seats and the Rockies had the lead for keeps. Heroics that also landed him the post-game TV interview.

Finally Watched the Doctor Operate

Yesterday, I finally got the chance to catch Roy Halladay pitch in a Phillies uniform. While he didn't dominate in the first couple of innings as the Mets threatened, he grew stronger as the game rolled on.
The Philadelphia Inquirer's Phil Sheridan noted how Halladay held a polite conversation with home plate umpire Mike Everett after the top of the 2nd inning. He quoted the reigning Cy Young Award winner: "I'm just trying to find out, really, where he's at... For a pitcher, it's always hard to see - you can't really tell if you're a couple inches on or off or up or down. So I was just trying to find out from him how close it was or if it's down or if it's off. Just trying to get a read, really."

Once armed with that knowledge, Halladay shut the Mets offense down completely... tossing seven shutout innings in an 11-0 Philadelphia win.

Philadelphia loves underdogs. The city's most beloved sports figure this side of the late Richie Ashburn is fictional fighter Rocky Balboa. All through Spring Training, unheralded minor leaguer Michael Martinez kept impressing.
Taking advantage of injuries to Chase Utley and Placido Polanco, he saw more playing time than a typical Rule 5 selection. By doing a lot of little things right -- fielding, bunting, situational hitting, he beat the odds and earned a spot on the Phils' opening day roster. Not bad for a 27 year-old, 5'9 infielder-outfielder whose five minor league seasons included just 33 Triple-A games on his resume.

When is an exhibition game highly anticipated? Just offer a March matchup of pitching aces from teams that are among the picks to make the post-season. Roy Halladay (above) gave the Phillies six shutout innings and CC Sabathia (below) did the same in his five-inning stint for the Yankees.

Spring Training 2011 Stop #3: Tampa

Just 35 miles from the small-town charm of Lakeland, we're in Tampa for and the second-half of a Grapefruit League "day/nighter."
You're now welcomed to Steinbrenner Field by a statue of the man for whom it's named. It towers over the plaza of plaques honoring the Yankees retired numbers.
The last moments of late day sun give a bronze glow to the impressive roof.
Nightfall just before the first pitch in Tampa.

Welcome to the Detroit Tigers pre-season headquarters, Joker Marchant Stadium. You have to like the street sign, honoring a pair of Motor City baseball legends.

Spring Training 2011 Stop #1: Clearwater

Our long northeast nightmare winter is over. It's 80 degrees and sunny, with the Phillies ready to host the Orioles in Clearwater. Cole Hamels, the youngest of Philadelphia's "Four Aces" got the start and, typical of an early Grapefruit League game, seemed more eager to work specific pitches in his repertoire than treat it totally as a regular game situation.

Last year, Manhattan College product Matt Rizzotti became one of the rising stars in the Phillies farm system (I caught him playing for Reading at New Britain in July). Nice to see him in a Phils uniform, taking over for Ryan Howard in the late innings.

Outfield prospect Michael Martinez, trying to make the Phillies after spending five years in Washington's farm system, lays down a bunt as part of the Phillies come-from-behind rally.

They scored twice in the bottom of the 9th for a 4-3 victory.
