Big Day for the White Sox

2015 will mark the the 10th anniversary since the White Sox last worlds championship. Clearly, the organization felt it needed to bring in more talent. Monday, two important names were locked in. The White Sox traded for veteran starting pitcher Jeff Samardzija and signed free agent closer David Robertson away from the Yankees. Add that to a club that features slugger Jose Abreu, the now-reigning Rookie of the Year -- plus newly signed power-hitter Adam LaRoche.
I'll admit being surprised the Yanks didn't work harder to hold onto Robertson, who did a generally effective job of closing following Mariano Rivera's retirement. Sure, there were some bumps in the road -- you wonder how long a June meltdown against the Twins lingered in Brian Cashman's memory -- but 39 saves in 44 chances is the mark of someone effective. Plus, on a club where so many pitchers have medical issues, Robertson never had a hint of an arm issue in his six years in the Bronx. Is that a sign of durability -- or does the cynic wonder that the warranty on the Alabaman's arm is about to run out?
Reluctance to go an extra year on a contract rings of what we saw a year ago, when another homegrown Yankee, Robbie Cano, left town. We'll see how letting Robertson go for just a draft pick works out.
