This Weekend in Baseball History
July 10th, 1999: The Mets come from behind in the bottom of the 9th inning, on Matt Franco's bases loaded, two-out, two RBI pinch single to slip past the Yankees 9-8. That snaps a Yankee streak of winning in 124 consecutive games when leading after eight innings.
July 10th, 1973: Jon Matlack fires a one-hit shutout as the Mets blank the Astros 1-0 at Shea Stadium. Tommy Helms' 6th inning single is all that stands between the lefthander and history. Matlack walked two and struck out seven -- including the last three batters of the game. (Duffy Dyer drove in the game's only run, on a 2nd inning single that scored Rusty Staub.)
July 10th, 1962: John F. Kennedy becomes the first president to toss the ceremonial first pitch at an All Star Game. JFK didn't have to travel far -- the game, which the National League takes 3-1, is played at Washington's brand new DC Stadium.

July 10th, 1936: Chuck Klein belts four homers in the Phillies 9-6, 10 inning win at Pittsburgh. Oddly, both times a Phillies player has connected for four round trippers it's taken place in 10 inning games on the road (40 years later, Mike Schmidt would match Klein's excellence against the Cubs at Wrigley.)
July 10th, 1934: Baseball's second All Star Game is remembered for Carl Hubbell's famous streak of five straight strikeouts, as he fans future Hall of Famers Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Jimmy Foxx, Al Simmons and Joe Cronin during the 1st and second innings.

July 11th, 2000: Derek Jeter gets three hits in three at-bats, scores a run and drived in another as the American League wins the 71st All-Star Game 6-3 at Turner Field in Atlanta. Jeter becomes the first Yankee named MVP in the game (since they began giving out the award in 1962).

July 11th, 1950: Cardinals 2nd baseman Red Schoendienst breaks the tie in another marathon All Star Game -- his home run in the top of the 14th inning (off Ted Gray), gives the National
League a 4-3 win at Comiskey Park.
