This Weekend in Baseball History


Aug. 27th, 1998: Bernie Williams doubles in Derek Jeter with the winning run in the bottom of the 11th for a 6-5 Yankees win over the Angels.

Aug. 27th, 1988: Tommy Lasorda wins his 1000th game as Dodgers skipper, as they beat the Phillies 4-2 at Veterans Stadium.

Aug. 27th, 1982: Rickey Henderson breaks Lou Brock's single season stolen base record, when he swipes his 119th base off the Brewers battery of Doc Medich and Ted Simmons. He adds three more in the A's 5-4 loss. By season's end Henderson's total grows to 130.  

Aug. 27th, 1980: Steve Carlton is a 20-game winner for the fifth time in his career. He teams with Tug McGraw as the Phillies edge the Dodgers 4-3 at Veterans Stadium.

Aug. 27th, 1978: Joe Morgan becomes the first player to reach 200 home runs and 500 stolen bases. His 3rd inning solo homer produces the Reds only run in a 7-1 loss to the Cubs.

Aug. 27th, 1977: Bump Wills and Toby Harrah of the Rangers author a baseball first: they hit back-to-back inside-the-park home runs on consecutive pitches (off Ken Clay). They're the highlights in Texas' 8-2 win at Yankee Stadium.

Aug. 27th, 1974: Benny Ayala homers in his first major league at-bat off Houston's Tom Griffin. The Mets go on to a 4-2 victory over the Astros at Shea Stadium.

Aug. 27th, 1963: Willie Mays hits his 400th career homer off Curt Simmons of the Cardinals. Orlando Cepeda and Felipe Alou also homer in the Giants 7-2 victory at Candlestick Park.

Aug. 27th, 1955: Sandy Koufax earns his first major league victory. An Ebbets Field crowd of 7204 sees a two-hit shutout by the highly touted Dodger rookie, as Brooklyn blanks the Cincinnati Reds 7 - 0. Koufax dominated the opposing line up; striking out 14, walking five, with the only two hits being a single in the first by Ted Kluszewski and a two-out double in the ninth by Sam Mele.

Aug. 27th, 1938: Monte Pearson becomes the first pitcher to throw a no-hitter in Yankee Stadium. His infielders turn a pair of double plays, so the right hander faces the minimum 27 batters while shutting out the Indians 13-0.

Aug. 27th, 1935: The White Sox win by taking the bat out of Lou Gehrig's hands. After the Yankees outslug Chicago 13-10 in the opener of a doubleheader, White Sox pitchers walk Gehrig in all five of his trips to the plate in the nightcap. The strategy works in a 4-3 Chicago victory -- as Gehrig ties the American League record for walks in a game.

August 28th, 2005: Jason Giambi belts three- and two-run homers and adds a two-run single in the Yankees 10-3 win over the Royals. His 7 RBI ties a career high. Each of the blasts helped him reach a milestone -- the first gave him 1000 career RBI, while the second was the 1500th hit of his career. 

August 28th, 2004: Tony Clark has the first three-homer-game of his career -- the last of which follows Ruben Sierra's 300th career homer (a grand slam!) in the Yankees 18-6 win over the Blue Jays in Toronto. 

August 28th, 2003: Jose Reyes becomes the youngest player ever to hit a home run from each side of the plate in the same game. The 20 year-old shortstop accounts for all the Mets runs, homering off Mike Hampton righthanded in the fifth inning; then, hitting lefty in the ninth, connects for a two run shot off Trey Hodges for 3-1 victory over the Braves at Turner Field

August 28th, 1992: The Brewers crush the Blue Jays 22-2 at SkyDome. The Toronto pitching staff yields 31 hits 22 of them, singles, as Milwaukee scores in every inning except the 5th.
 
August 28th, 1990: Ryne Sandberg becomes the first second baseman to hit 30 home runs in consecutive seasons when he leads off the fouth inning with a blast to deep left field off Bill Gullickson. The Cubs roll to a 5-2 victory at the Astrodome. (And Sandberg wasn't done -- he'd go on to finish the season with a league leading 40 home runs.) 

Aug. 28th, 1971: Rick Wise is again both the pitching and hitting star -- belting a pair of home runs, including a grand slam, while pitching the Phillies to a 7-3 win over the Giants. It's Wise's second two-homer game of the season -- the other had been his no-hitter against the Reds five weeks earlier! 

Aug. 28th, 1970: Juan Marichal earns his 200th victory as the Giants beat the Pirates 5-1. 

Aug. 28th, 1967: Johnny Bench's major league debut isn't much to talk about. The Reds highly touted catching prospect goes hitless in three at-bats, and is pinch hit for by Chico Ruiz in the bottom of the 9th, as Cincinnati falls to the Phillies, 3-2. 

Aug. 28th, 1962: Al Jackson fires his fourth shutout of the season, holding the Phillies to three hits, in a Mets 2-0 victory at Connie Mack Stadium. 

Aug. 28th, 1955: A night after Sandy Koufax's first shutout, the Dodgers other pitching "pheenom" Karl Spooner comes close to matching it. He tosses a complete game six-hitter and strikes out nine, as Brooklyn downs the Cardinals 6-1. Gil Hodges and Roy Campanella homer for the league-leading Bums.

Aug. 28th, 1952: Robin Roberts pitches all nine innings as the Phillies beat the Cardinals 10-6 at Sportsman's Park in St. Louis -- the first of an amazing 27 consective complete game performances. The future Hall of Famer wouldn't be lifted for a reliever for the next 10-1/2 months, July 9th, 1953 against the Dodgers. 
 
Aug. 29th, 2018: Christian Yelich hits for the cycle as part of a six-for-six night, in the Brewers 13-12 10-inning win over the Reds.

Aug. 29th, 2010: For the first time ever, a call overturned by the umpires results in a walk off home run. After first ruling Brian McCann's bottom of the 9th hit a double, video replay convinces them the ball that bounced off the top of the outfield wall was actually a home run. The Braves claim a 7-6 win over the Marlins. 

Aug. 29th, 2004: Albert Pujols homers off Brian Meadows of the Pirates to become the fourth player to reach 100 RBIs in each of his first four (full) seasons. (The Cardinals star is in good company -- the others are Hall of Famers Al Simmons, Joe DiMaggio and Ted Williams.) 

Aug. 29th, 1998: Derek Jeter sets a new Yankee record for home runs in a season by a shortstop. His 17th of season passes Roy Smalley's old mark, en route to an 11-6 victory over the Mariners. 

Aug. 29th, 1993: George Brett joins Willie Mays and Hank Aaron as the only players with 200th stolen bases, 3,000 hits and 300 home runs. His 3rd inning theft goes along with a four hit game as the Royals edge the Red Sox 5-4 in 12 innings at Kauffman Stadium. 

Aug. 29th, 1981: Lee Smith earns his first career save as the Cubs hold off the Dodgers 3-1 in L.A. 

Aug. 29th, 1977: Lou Brock breaks Ty Cobb's career stolen base record. He swipes a pair against the Padres, but Mike Ivie's 8th inning home run brings San Diego from behind for a 4-3 victory. 

Aug. 29th, 1972: Bobby Murcer hits for the cycle -- but has to share honors with Johnny Callison, whose walk-off single in the 11th inning gives the Yankees a 7-6 win over the Texas Rangers. 

Aug. 29th, 1966: Robin Roberts becomes the first and only pitcher to beat the Braves while they represented Boston, Milwaukee, and Atlanta! He works scoreless 13th and 14th innings while George Altman's two RBI single in the top of the 14th gives Chicago a 4-2 victory. Of all the records and milestones in baseball, this might be the most unbreakable of them all!

Aug. 29th, 1965: Willie Mays breaks Ralph Kiner's record for home runs in a month when the Giants superstar crushes a Jack Fischer pitch for his 17th during August in an 8-3 Shea Stadium victory over the Mets. Kiner, not only saw it happen, but called the action as one of the Mets broadcasters. 

Aug. 29th, 1948: Jackie Robinson hits for the cycle, scores three times, drives in two and steals a base as the Dodgers outscore the Cardinals 12-7 at Sportsman's Park.
