8th Inning Lightning

Cardinals shortstop Paul DeJong entered the Friday night's game hitting an ugly .140.  But this weekend against the Yankees, he channeled his inner Musial to help St. Louis sweep the Yanks at Busch Stadium.

  • Friday night, his two-RBI double off Clay Holmes with two out in the last of the 8th brought the Redbirds from behind in their 4-3 victory.
  • Sunday, his three-run homer off Scott Effross put the game away in  the 8th inning after the Yanks had crept within a run. Earlier, his 5th inning double gave the Cardinals a 7-6 lead.
Whatever was ailing DeJong's bat since mid-April when his average dropped under .200 was gone this weekend... as he helped St. Louis run its winning streak to seven and extend the Yankees longest skid of the season to five.
Things don't get any easier for the AL East leaders; they're off to Seattle to visit a Mariners club that beat them two of three last week in the Bronx.
