If Your Birthday is July 7th...

...you share with the world's most famous rock and roll drummer. Ringo Starr. While there's little info to connect him with baseball -- unlike his onetime band-mate, there aren't any pictures of him enjoying a game at Yankee Stadium (or anywhere else) -- plenty of ballplayers share his birthday. And the odds are that some of them are Beatle fans, From the top, there's infielder Yangervis Solarte, who made his big league debut with the Yankees in 2014, before being traded to the Padres for Chase Headley. Here's Mets 3rd base coach Tim Teuful, The Greenwich, Connecticut product broke into the majors as a Twin, but is best remembered as Wally Backman's righty platoon partner at 2nd base on the champion '86 Mets,  Below, he tries to help umpire a close play in front of him. Below, a look at John Buck, who caught for seven major league teams in his 11-season career -- and spent much of 2013 with the Mets, where he smacked 15 homers in 101 games. Besid...

Not the Whole Story

Sano Makes the Show

Image
It was great learning that Miguel Sano has been promoted to the Twins. A couple of years ago, I saw a lot of him while playing for New Britain, where he smacked 19 homers in half-a-season. Added to the 16 he tallied in the Florida State League, he was on the fast track to the majors -- until suffering an elbow injury the following spring training. It cost him all of 2014. Healthy again, he started 2015 with the Twins new AA affiliate in Chattanooga. His power returned; and was hitting in the .270s (40 points higher than at New Britain). Sano is in the right organization -- the Twins value home-grown talent and he should fit in nicely alongside such up-and-comers as Byron Buxton and Brian Dozier. Ironically, the player Sano replaced with Minnesota, Kennys Vargas is another New Britain "alum." who made big strides while playing for the Rock Cats in 2014.

Joe Maddon

One of baseball's most respected managers now calls Wrigley Field home. Here's a good look at the Spencer Tracy-esque profile of Joe Maddon watching from the Cubs dugout as they played the Mets Wednesday night.

Game-winning Hit

Image
Starlin Castro's lunging, awkward swing produced a bloop hit that broke a scoreless tie in the top of the 11th last night. The Cubs went onto to a 2 - 0 win over the offensively challenged Mets at Citi Field. The game was not an artistic success -- while there was quality starting pitching from Bartolo Colon and Jon Lester, there was sloppy base-running on both sides and a decided lack of clutch hitting. And then, there was the botched suicide squeeze attempt (below). With a runner on 3rd base and one man out, Terry Collins chose to force the action. Unfortunately, rookie Darrell Ceciliani couldn't get the bat on the ball -- costing the Mets their best chance to score, as Ruben Tejada was thrown out trying to scamper back to the base. On a holiday week with schools closed for the summer, the seats gradually emptied out -- and those premium seats which are never full, looked especially sparse by the time the game went into extra innings. Clearly, this was not a night for th...
