Friday Flashback

From June 1992, Yankees visiting the old Cleveland Stadium. That's Don Mattingly at bat for New York. Sandy Alomar Junior is behind the plate. On the outfield wall, the Indians retired numbers 18 for Mel Harder and 19 for Bob Feller. What else catches your eye? The sparse crowd in the upper deck, especially with the bleachers looking pretty full. A sign for Continental Airlines, now merged into United. This weekend series with the Yankees marked my only visit to the ballpark replaced two years later by Jacobs, now Progressive Field.

The WMMS and WHK radio billboards on the right field upper deck facade gives it away... the old and cavernous Cleveland Municipal Stadium!

I attended the very last series the Yanks played in that mammoth park. Paul O'Neill went 4 for 5 in the Saturday game, and afterward, as he signed autographs for loads of fans, he was berating himself for not going 5 for 5! The Yanks won that game, but it was almost all due to bad calls by the umps.

I bought a T-Shirt commemorating the final season of Municipal Stadium. The shirt has weathered the years better than the ballpark ever did!
