History on top of History
Saturday was destined to be a fascinating day at Yankee Stadium. It began with reunion of the 1996 World Champions. Only hours after Alex Rodriguez' final game in pinstripes, a corner was turned. The suddlenly younger lineup, featuring such farm system products as Gary Sanchez, Tyler Austin and Aaron Judge, took the field against the Rays. And in the bottom of the 2nd inning -- two of those newcomers combined on something never before done in baseball.
The number seven and eight batters, Tyler Austin (above) and Aaron Judge (below) homered during their first plate appearances -- back to back blasts by two teammates making their big league debuts in the same game. Never in 147 years -- reaching back to 1869 -- had that been accomplished. A youthful jolt, by a revised Yankee team trying to identify its next core and maintain fan interest in the season's final month and a half.
