This Weekend in Baseball History

May 22nd, 1976: Reggie Smith belts three home runs and drives in five, as the Cardinals outscore the Phillies 7-6 at Veterans Stadium.

May 22nd, 1963: Mickey Mantle's homer off Bill Fischer of the A's bounces off the facade high above the right field seats at Yankee Stadium. It's the highlight of an 8 - 7 win over the Kansas City A's.

May 22nd, 1930:  The Yankee bats were blazing! In the second game of a doubleheader, Lou Gehrig hits three home runs and Babe Ruth adds another in a 20-13 win over the Philadelphia Athletics. The Bambino had a pair in the opener after belting three in the previous game. Ruth ties a major league record with six homers over a three-game span.

May 23rd, 2004: Tom Glavine shuts the Rockies out on just one hit. Kit Pellow breaks up the no-no bid with an 8th inning single of the Mets 4 - 0 victory.

May 23rd, 2002: Shawn Green becomes the first Dodger since Gil Hodges (in 1950) to belt four home runs in a game -- and adds a double and single for 19 total bases in a 16-3 rout of the Brewers.

May 23rd, 2001: Derek Jeter has the first five-hit game of his career: three singles a double and a home run in a 7 - 3 Yankee Stadium win over the Red Sox.

May 23rd, 1991: Tommy Greene no-hits the Expos, striking out -- and snaring a hard grounder for the final out -- 10 in the Phillies 2-0 win at Olympic Stadium.

May 23rd, 1991: Kirby Puckett of the Twins becomes the first American League player with a six-hit game during the 1990s. His five singles and a triple aren't enough -- as the Rangers win 10-6 at the Metrodome.

May 23rd, 1970: Bob Gibson strikes out a career regular-season best 16, and outduels fellow future Hall of Famer Jim Bunning in the Cardinals 3-1 victory at Connie Mack Stadium. Dick Allen shares the spotlight smacking a pair of St. Louis homers against his former team.

May 23rd, 1962: Joe Pepitone becomes the second Yankee ever to homer twice in the same inning. His pair of 8th inning blasts highlight a 13-7 win over the Kansas City A's. (Joe DiMaggio was the first Yankee to homer twice in an inning, back in 1936.)

May 24th, 1999: Joel Bennett was the Phillies' starting pitcher and Gary Bennett (no relation) his catcher as the Phillies hosted the Expos at Veterans Stadium. Joel wasn't around to claim the victory, but Gary drove in the first of three sixth inning runs as Philadelphia edged Montreal 5-4. It was the first time in club history that both ends of battery had the same last name. Too bad the Phils didn't invite Tony Bennett in to sing the national anthem that night.

May 24th, 1996: Ken Griffey Junior has the first three home run game of his career as the Mariners beat the Yankees 10-4 at the Kingdome. Griffey also singled in 1st inning, and was driven home by Jay Buhner, giving him five runs scored on the night.

May 25th, 1999: Tino Martinez of the Yankees and Edgar Martinez of the Mariners each belted grand slams (Yanks against the Red Sox; M's versus Minnesota). It was the first time in baseball history that two players with the same last name hit bases-loaded home runs the same day.

May 25th, 1959: Harvey Haddix's legendary performance -- as the Pirates lefty throws 12 perfect innings, before the Braves win it 1-0 in the 13th on an error, sacrifice and Joe Adcock's RBI double.

May 25th, 1933: Chuck Klein hits for the cycle for the second time as a Phillie. His big day still wasn't enough to post a W -- the Cardinals held on for 5-4 victory at Sportsman's Park.

May 24th, 1994: Cal Ripken belts his 300th career home and adds a bases loaded double in the Orioles 13-5 win at County Stadium, Milwaukee.

May 24th, 1985: Jack Morris pitches a complete game as the Tigers beat the A's 5-1 in Oakland to raise their record to 35-5 -- the best 40-game start in history.

May 24th, 1936: Tony Lazzeri of the Yankes becomes the first player to hit two grand slams in the same game (in the 2nd and 5th innings). The future Hall of Famer adds another round tripper as well as a triple for a total of 11 RBIs in New York's 25-2 victory over the A's at Shibe Park in Philadelphia. Lazzeri was really 'locked in' to a hitting groove; this game followed on the heels of 2 homers in his final 3 at-bats the day before (in the 2nd game of a doubleheader). The numbers: over a streak of 8 at-bats covering 2 games he drove 5 homers and a triple while striking out twice.

May 24th, 1935: In the first night game in major league history, the Reds edge the Phillies 2-1 at Crosley Field. 20,422 are on hand.
